Instagram post sizes in 2026: feed, carousel, grid, Reels and Stories

By YK Labs · October 20, 2026

Three Slash screens, the home screen with this week's drop, a carousel ready to share and a reel of the roll

Instagram changed two things in the last two years that most size guides still get wrong: posts can now be 3:4, and the profile grid shows tall thumbnails instead of squares. Here are the sizes that work today, and the one to pick when you are not sure.

The short answer

For photos, use 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4) if you care about your profile grid, or 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) if you only care about the feed. Both fill much more of the screen than a square.

Feed posts

Instagram accepts photos from a wide 1.91:1 to a tall 3:4, at 1080 pixels wide.

Shape Size in pixels Use it for
3:4 portrait 1080 × 1440 The tallest post, and the shape of the profile grid
4:5 portrait 1080 × 1350 Portraits and outfits, the classic tall post
1:1 square 1080 × 1080 Products, flat lays, text posts
1.91:1 landscape 1080 × 566 Wide scenes (it looks small in the feed)

Anything taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1 gets cropped when you post it. A bigger file than 1080 pixels wide is fine, but Instagram resizes it.

Profile grid

Since January 2025, the profile grid shows taller thumbnails instead of squares, about 3:4. That changes what your grid looks like:

  • 3:4 posts show in full on the grid.
  • 4:5 and square posts get their sides trimmed in the thumbnail. The full post still shows when someone taps it.

If you plan a grid layout, a puzzle feed or a photo split across several posts, work in 3:4 so the pieces line up on your profile.

Carousels

  • Up to 20 photos and videos per carousel, since August 2024.
  • One shape for every slide. The shape you choose applies to the whole carousel, so crop all your photos to the same ratio before you post.
  • 4:5 is the safe pick for a photo dump: tall enough to fill the feed, and every slide stays consistent.

Want a panorama that continues from one slide to the next? Our free image splitter cuts one photo into a seamless carousel or a 3:4 grid, right in your browser.

Reels

  • 9:16, 1080 × 1920 pixels, full screen.
  • Instagram accepts Reels from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 720 pixels and 30 frames per second.
  • The cover image is shown at 420 × 654 pixels; keep faces and text in the middle so the grid crop doesn’t cut them.

Stories

  • 9:16, 1080 × 1920 pixels. Keep important text away from the top and bottom, where the profile name and the reply bar sit.

Make every photo count

The right size only matters if the photos are worth posting. With Slash, one photo of you becomes a whole roll: add slashes like /fisheye, /pov or /directflash, pick the takes you like in order, and share them as a carousel or a reel. For captions, see our list of photo dump captions.
